About Beeston
Beeston is located just under 3.5miles south-west of Nottingham city centre and has excellent transport links via train, tram and bus. Beeston outgrew its village status as a centre of silk weaving in the early 1800’s. The towns first silk mill was burnt down in the Reform Bill riots of 1831. With the decline of the silk industry in the region many former silk mills turned towards light industrial uses in the early 20th century. One prominent Beeston business of this era - Beeston Boiler Company - products can still be found through the commonwealth.

Beeston has numerous buildings of historic interest , including a manor house and the parish church of St John the Baptist. The church dates from the 11th century, but was rebuilt in 1843 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Both are included in the West End conservation area, which covers several buildings, many historical or of character, along Dovecote Lane, Grange Avenue, West End, and Church Street. Included in the area is the historic Village Cross.

Beeston is also home to the University of Nottingham - originally it began life as Nottingham Community College based in the city centre. After the First World War, the college had outgrown its original building. A generous act by Sir Jesse Boot (of boots the chemist fame) saw him donate 35 acres of land at Highfields, and in 1928 the College moved to what is now the main campus, University Park. Initially, it was accommodated in the elegant Trent Building and was officially opened by King George V in November of that year.

In 1948, the college was awarded the Royal Charter and became The University of Nottingham, and with at was now able to award degrees in its own name. During this same period The School of Agriculture was created when the Midland College of Agriculture at Sutton Bonington merged with the University.
