About Lenton Nottingham
The history of Lenton begins as a small village located outside the west of Nottinghams boundary. A large Cluniac priory was founded in Lenton at the start of twelfth century and become one of the wealthiest monastic institutions in the whole of the Midlands.
After dissolution of the monasteries the land became the property of the Crown who sold off to private individuals, all of the buildings were demolished and the materials reclaimed for use elsewhere. As a result there is almost nothing of Lenton Priory left above ground although most of the foundations are still in place.
A small hospital chapel on the site was repurposed as a parish church, known as St. Anthony's Church the chancel is from the time of Priory, but the rest of the building is of modern construction.
Following the demise of the Priory the village of Lenton was now just a rural backwater and its few inhabitants were simple agriculturalists.
The construction of the Nottingham Canal, in the 1790s, and its route past Lenton saw the arrival of a number of large factories being built and the need for more people to live and work in the area.
In 1801 the population was just 893, rising to 1,240 by 1821, just a decade later the population was up to 3,077.
Local entrepreneurs unable to find suitable building land within Nottingham began to acquire land outside the town to construct both residential and industrial properties which lead to the creation of 'New Lenton' located away from the existing village on what was previously farmland. Most other small villages in close proximity to Nottingham underwent the same process like New Radford, New Basford and New Sneinton.
A large number of residents in Lenton during the early part of the 1800,s would have earned their living working in the lace trade. By the 1850s well over twenty firms were manufacturing lace in Lenton and additional supportive businesses were providing employment for lace machine builders, bobbin and carriage makers.
In 1877 Lenton became part of Nottingham following the enlargement of the city boundaries and now one of its inner suburbs of this large city. The lace factories are all long gone, and with it most of the original housing built at the same time.
New build housing and have been erected in their place while other parts of the area has also been used for industry. Raleigh, the one time world's largest maker of bicycles, had offices up till the late 1990s still in Lenton although much smaller then in its heyday. John Player's factory and offices in Radford, were also relocated to Lenton Industrial Estate. Lenton also boasts to being the home to the QMC - Queen's Medical Centre, one of the largest teaching hospitals in the whole of Europe.
