Bestwood Country Park is a country park near the village of Bestwood, Nottingham. During medieval times Bestwood was a hunting ground owned by the Crown up till the 17th century, when King Charles II gave it to his mistress, Nell Gwyn and their son. During the Victorian era, Bestwood was the location of a coal mine that closed in 1967. The mine was the world's first to produce 1000,000 tonnes of coal in a single year. It was then established as a country park in 1973.

Before the industrial revolution took place Bestwood was just a small hamlet who’s inhabitants worked in agriculture and framework knitting. Bestwood Village expanded greatly when its coal mine was sunk in 1875 by the local land owners the Lancaster family. Their newly created Bestwood Coal and Iron Company also opened an ironworks next to the colliery in 1881 with four blast furnaces. It remained in operation upto 1928. The coalmine was one of the most successful mines in the Nottinghamshire coalfield during its peak era it employed over 2000 men.

The surviving headstock and winding house of Bestwood Colliery in the Nottinghamshire Coalfield, with its vertical steam engine of 1873, has been preserved to commemorate Bestwood's industrial heritage. It stands at the entrance to the park and is now a listed building
