About Arnold
Arnold was referred to as ‘Ernehale’ in the Domesday Book, this former name has the meaning ‘place frequented by eagles’ or ‘the valley of eagles’, more recently it’s less ‘of eagles’ but more ‘of people, after a low cost pint & meal as it’s the now name of the local Wetherspoons.

Arnold was a centre of the framework knitting industry in the 19th century. It was also the location for some of the first framebreaking incidents of which later became known as the Luddite riots, taking place in March 1811, when 63 frames were broken beyond repair. The Luddite riots were a workers’ response to ever decreasing pay, terrible standards of living and also conditions of employment in the framework knitting industry.
