The property in Sneinton had a old Upvc door but was a auto locking mechanism meaning as the family left the property they lifted the handle and it lock without turning a key in the cylinder and walked down to the local shop it wasn’t till they arrived home they realised that the keys had not been taken and were now locked out.
Unlike newer auto locking mechanism which only have the latch catching and can be shimmed this mechanism was fully engaged and would need the cylinder to be turned.
The property also had a thumb turn fitted to the door so it would require a little more than just picking the cylinder, thumb turns are designed slightly different from a ordinary cylinder and require after picking for the cam to be engaged and turned manually unlike a keyed cylinder where the cam is automatically engaged when the plug is turned.
